8/13/2023 0 Comments Anti fog for glassesBy comparison, all of the other anti-fog sprays we tested cost significantly more per ounce. Most impressively, FogAway costs just $8.99 for a 2-ounce bottle (at the time of this writing). The FogAway can also be applied on AR and non-AR coated glasses - Gamer Advantage says that the FogAway is usable on any type of lens or screen. This was in the ballpark for most of the sprays we tested - typically they lasted for around 24 hours, but considering we took our glasses through a full day of snow shoveling, outdoor walks and errands in 20-degree Fahrenheit weather, FogAway’s durability was nothing to scoff at. I was a little sceptical though it is really impressive! Everything else around the order was very efficient.Your CNN account Log in to your CNN accountĪfter our FogAway treatment dried, a bit of buffing with a microfiber cloth was necessary to remove dried suds.ĭuring our testing, it took nearly 18 hours until the FogAway coating started to wear off on our anti-reflective (AR) coated glasses. Reglazed glasses received successfully thank you. Thank you Lensology (and of-course Andrea for without her help, I’d still be stumbling around) The lenses themselves are brilliant and absolutely fog free – no more squinting to read through lenses or having to remove to clean many times in a short time whilst wearing the face mask. After choosing the frame, everything else was typical of the company – perfect service and glasses despatched within a few days. As my prescription hadn’t changed and I wanted to keep my existing glasses, Andrea kindly sent me photos of available glasses appropriate to what I liked. I only needed a quick chat to be convinced that fog free glasses were exactly what was needed. So, on the phone to the company and, in particular, Andrea who has looked after my sighting needs so well. I was getting fed up ‘fogging up’ every time I wore my ‘Covid’ face mask and I happened to look at a promotion from Lensology about fog free glasses. We can’t stand behind and promote products that don’t work, the results of whether Anti-Fog works or not is instant, they either do or they don’t, we are happy to say that ours passed with flying colours. We have extensively tested all manufacturers lenses that are available to us and quite frankly none of them stood up to the test. The only thing you need to do to keep your Anti-Fog glasses performing at their peak is to keep your lenses clean, just like you would any other type of lens.Īt this point our Anti-Fog lenses are only available as clear with scratch resistance, this means that the technology cannot be applied to Anti-Reflection, Tinted/Sunglass or Transitions lens types. The Anti-Fog technology applied to our range of lenses provides permanent protection against fogging and misting, no special sprays, wipes or activating cloths are necessary. They are also fully UV protected and have a hard coat layer that protects against accidental scratching. Our Anti-Fog lenses are made from a Polycarbonate material, this means that they are not only slim and light but are also impact resistant. Lensology provide an Anti-Fog solution with both Single Vision and Varifocal lenses. Lensologys Anti-Fog fix is unique because it’s permanent straight out of the packet, because it’s part of the lens material itself it therefore works all day and night without you having to do anything to keep it doing its job, doesn’t that’s sound nice, simple and easy? All the alternatives are basically activators and this makes them another thing you have to remember to do, just another inconvenience you don’t have time for. They have a window of time when they will be effective, and if you don’t have your sprays or wipes handy then the result is foggy glasses and this will often happen at the most inconvenient time. Sprays, wipes and cleaning cloths are all temporary, unless you are constantly using or applying them then they simply stop working. Well, that’s a fair question, the internet is awash with products, hacks and tips to stop your glasses from misting up, so what makes ours your best choice? Well, we’ve done our homework and have found that all the “solutions” out there require too much work and effort, and that none of them seem that effective anyway. 8/13/2023 0 Comments Pictures of old silosThe missile would have originally sat in the space beyond the railing… We continued through yet another huge door…īeside it, cables connecting the launch control room to the silo would have passed through these openings: Reverse on the door: these doors would all be latched shut in the event of a launch: We continued down the main staircase to the bottom floor:įrom there, we passed through another enormous steel door… I’m not sure why, but circular rooms centered around enormous cement columns have such a definitive retro-by-way-of-1950’s-futurism feel:Ī winding staircase was installed by the new owners…īut now for the good stuff: the silo. A lot of cool ornamentation remains though, like these original lighting fixtures: Sadly, the military ripped out anything of proprietary value from the launch control and silo, including the computers. In fact, this particular silo, which opened in 1962 and closed in 1965, was never even equipped with a missile. And yet by the mid-1960’s, all of the Atlas facilities were decommissioned, rendered obsolete by the next generation Titan II rocket (and later, the Nuclear Arms treaty). Meanwhile, this is the countdown monitor panel, located on one of the banks of computers in the background of the picture above:Ī facility like this cost around $18,000,000 in 1958, nearly $400,000,000 in today’s dollars. I’m curious if this phone was also involved – it looks like you’d insert a key to “Commit.” I’m not exactly sure which one is the launch button – click below for a much larger picture: While skimming through the 537 page Atlas base instruction manual (of course there was a manual! Click here to read it – 29mb PDF), I came across a schematic of the computer layout complete with labels. That’s an actual Atlas-F Launch Control Center pictured above. Picture courtesy of – Click for more about US Missile Silos! See the tube marked Escape Hatch? The original escape hatch is still there to this day, and actually was one of the easiest ways of loading building materials in and out of the complex during renovations:īut of course, the real question is: what did the missile launch computer look like? Here it is, courtesy of the insanely informative site. To get a sense of where we are in the facility, here’s a schematic of the launch control center (we entered down that long staircase, passed through the blast doors, and continued into launch control): Hundreds of such launch sites were built throughout the United States, including 12 Atlas F facilities in the Plattsburgh area. Our first stop was the former launch control room, which has been renovated by the owners into a multi-story living space.īack in the 1960’s, this would have been filled with computers used to launch and guide an intercontinental ballistic missile armed with a nuclear warhead in the event of, well, Armageddon ala Dr. Here, you find yourself at the top of a cement staircase, which takes you to both the missile launch control room and the 9-story silo: There are not one but two blast doors at the entrance to the facility: I immediately contacted the owners, who graciously provided me with a tour which I am thrilled to present below. Why would you need a 2,000 pound steel blast door in the middle of the Adirondacks?īecause this particular house was built on the site of a 9-story Cold War-era Atlas F underground missile launch site – and it’s still there:īackstory: I was in upstate New York over Christmas break when I read an article in the local paper about a man who had purchased a decommissioned 1960’s missile launch site in 1995, built a few houses and an airstrip on the property, and was now looking to sell it ( $750k and it’s yours! click here!), or perhaps lease it for film production use. …leading to a 2,000 pound steel blast door: …revealing a long staircase surrounded by cement walls… If you were to enter the correct keycode, the door would swing open… It’s about then you might notice the keypad on the wall beside the door, and perhaps become curious about what was on the other side. But if you were to try the door, you’d find it locked. Just about the last thing you’d notice is this door:Īfter all, it seems like nothing other than a closet, or maybe a door to the basement. …with enormous windows offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Saranac Valley: Inside, the spacious living room is indeed a cozy place to escape the winter’s cold… When you first see it in the distance, you wouldn’t think it anything other than a picturesque home in the Adirondacks:Īs you head for the door, chopped wood piled high around the porch almost invites you in to warm up over a roaring fire. As always, all pictures are my own work, and I don’t think you’ll find a tour like this anywhere else. Quick note: Though you may have read about this property before, most articles have simply reprinted the same stock real estate photos over and over. 8/13/2023 0 Comments Empire boom boom boom boomDC was eerily empty Saturday morning but walking along the north side of the White House a Secret Service SUV suddenly stopped and rolled down its window. One of the first things we did was walk by the White House. Dads love to beat the rush and dads love early flights because the airport is less crowded. We left our house at 3am, because dads love arriving super early for flights. So while we were sightseeing, I constantly compared it with what it must have been like when my dad took me there in 1993. Coincidentally my son is now 10 (and my daughter is 12). The last time I was in DC was 30 years ago. My family just got back from a trip to Washington DC for the White House Easter Egg Roll. Now that I’m a dad I realize he took ambivalence as a challenge, that he would be able to convince us of how fascinating it all really was. It’s not that he didn’t care that we didn’t like it. He was unphased by our groans and complaints, in fact he may have been fueled by them, as dads often are. When I was a kid, my dad LOOOVED taking us to the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum. In one of nature’s cruelest twists, kids are, historically, not huge fans. And I’m doubly sure preteens will lose their mind for it.ĭads love history, monuments, and museums. I’m sure some young popstars will be thrilled to design in-game swag to share with fans. Considering the game’s been around since 2006, many artists will have grown up on Roblox themselves. Collectables and achievements are nothing new in video games – or, as we’ve seen with NFTs in the last year, real life for that matter. The artists are also as involved with the creative process as they’d like to be. But while it’s Dad Law to roll your eyes and act like your wallet is welded shut in these scenarios, Spotify made clear that in-game merch proceeds go directly to the artist. As someone who spent money on multiple skins for the various Avengers in a game I don’t even like, I have no commentary on this. In-game, Spotify will host mini-quests, virtual meet-and-greets, and other interactive experiences with artists, including, obviously, selling MERCH! Yes, what kid hasn’t begged for some extra virtual dollars to spend on a virtual t-shirt for their virtual person. That’s all pretty familiar territory to online gamers, but the hook is how Spotify will use this space to host unique moments between artists and fans. The tokens you collect can be exchanged for in-game content, such as emotes and cosmetic changes to your avatar. The basic gameplay of Spotify Island is to parkour your way around a digital island paradise, collecting heart-shaped tokens, finding hidden easter eggs, and interacting with other players at beat-making stations. The game allows players to engage with user-generated content, mainly in the form of mini-games players can create and share. Look, Spotify, you know me, you know how many times a week I listen to Bruce Springsteen’s Darkness on the Edge of Town what kind of coffee did you expect me to order?Īnyway, the Roblox thing. When I arrived, there was a full coffee bar in the lobby, complete with a barista who was very unimpressed by my order of regular black coffee. Sidenote: I have to say, the Spotify office is pretty rad. 8/13/2023 0 Comments Hypno picturesAs anticipated, hypnosis had no significant effect on a discrimination task that required determining whether there were differences between pairs of simultaneously presented pictures. The differential effect between lows and highs was in the anticipated direction but not significant (Experiments 1 and 2). Subjects reported enhanced imagery vividness on the self-report Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire during hypnosis. Reaction time was not affected by hypnosis, although high hypnotizables were faster than lows in their responses (Experiments 1 and 2). 001) with enhanced performance during hypnosis, but it was uncorrelated with waking performance (Experiment 3). Consistently, hypnotically responsive individuals showed enhanced performance during hypnosis, whereas nonresponsive ones did not. To investigate the hypothesis that hypnosis has an enhancing effect on imagery processing, as mediated by hypnotic responsiveness and cognitive strategies, four experiments compared performance of low and high, or low, medium, and high, hypnotically responsive subjects in waking and hypnosis conditions on a successive visual memory discrimination task that required detecting differences between successively presented picture pairs in which one member of the pair was slightly altered.
